(February 16/2018) The Ministry of Education has built many schools under the Education for Generations Movement, which aims to improve and complete the infrastructure of schools.
In particular, by focusing on pre-primary education and by emphasizing that the education and training policy should be free and compulsory, more than 34,000 schools have been built and are providing services.
Although these schools have been built in the past years, many children have been out of school due to the lack of access to pre-primary education; special attention is being paid to addressing this and making them accessible.
It was also stated that areas where pre-primary education is not available and districts that are given priority for construction of schools have been identified.
It was also indicated that the Ministry of Education is planning to raise more than 6 billion birr for the construction of schools in these specific districts through a performance-based financial support system.
According to the cost study conducted, 726 of the pre-primary schools to be built will be built by the Ministry of Education. These educational institutions will be built only if the region is able to build them in the mentioned districts or areas with the same amount of money as the Ministry of Education, either through the regional budget or through community fundraising.
It was stated that in the next 6 months, the Ministry of Education and the regions are planning to build 726 pre-primary schools, totaling 1452, across the country.
It was also indicated that the design of the schools will be made and will be modified according to the actual conditions of each area and will have at least two classrooms, a dining hall, a children’s dormitory, a teacher’s office, a toilet room, and playgrounds that will play a positive role in the overall development of children by inspiring them to be creative.
The construction of these schools will also allow all Ethiopian children to receive at least two years of pre-primary preparatory education before entering first grade.
