Universities should be institutions that understand the current state of the world; conduct research and studies that can lead the country out of trouble and generate ideas based on truth and knowledge. Minister of Education Professor Berhanu Nega
(July 29/2017) The Minister of Education, in his message delivered at the closing ceremony of the Higher Education Institutions Reform Council, noted that reforms that can bring about a major change in the education sector are being designed and implemented to overcome the current problem of quality of education.
In particular, universities should be institutions that understand the current state of the world; conduct research and studies that can lead the country out of trouble and generate ideas based on truth and knowledge.
If we want to avoid being destroyed as a society, we must fundamentally implement these reforms from top to bottom to create a generation that can withstand this.
The Minister said that we want to have quality education in Ethiopian higher education institutions and urged that from now on, the competition between universities should be only in the quality of education they provide and the research and studies they conduct.
He added that we also want to create an environment in universities where qualified students can come together and learn from qualified teachers.
State Minister for Higher Education Development Ato Kora Tushune, for his part, said that this Reform Council meeting was a place to see where the higher education sector is going; how we can implement the reform.
He said that the implementation of key tasks was not to rank universities but to see what level the universities are at.
He also said that the two-day conference reached a consensus on the changes being made in the education system.
The Ethiopian Government Higher Education Institutions Reform Council meeting, which was hosted by Gondar University under the theme “Higher Education for Greater Impact”, has also concluded.
