(November 20, 2018) At the same time, the delegation was led by Unisa’s Principal and Vice-Chancellor Prof Puleng LenkaBula; He explained to the Minister that UNISA has been graduating many students and civil servants in the fields of education, research and technology since 2006, in accordance with the previous agreement with the Ethiopian government.
The Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, for his part, said that the education system in Ethiopia was very problematic and that citizens of higher education were buying degrees for money;
To address this, he explained to the delegation that various reforms are being implemented in the education sector to ensure the quality of education and to produce competent, competitive citizens, and that changes are being recorded as a result.
The Minister said that the world is currently developing rapidly and on the other hand, it is becoming very complex. He noted that UNISA, based on the agreement and program that began 20 years ago, cannot be continued in line with Ethiopia’s current needs and economic growth, and that cooperation in the education sector in Africa should be based on this.
He added that joint efforts in the education sector should focus on educational fields such as mining, petrochemicals, agro-industry, etc., which will help develop the human resources needed to achieve the development plans our country has.
State Minister for Higher Education Development Ato Kora Tushune, for his part, said that although UNISA has been operating in our country for the past 20 years, a new dialogue can be held in the future based on Ethiopia’s development needs.
During the discussion, the two parties agreed to establish a joint committee to identify areas where cooperation is possible and to present issues that can serve as a basis for further discussion.
Various leaders of UNISA University, including the South African Ambassador to Ethiopia, were present at the discussion.
