(February 09/2018) Ethiopian Women Researchers Day was celebrated in Addis Ababa. The Minister of Women and Social Affairs, Honorable Ergoge Tesfaye (Dr.), who attended the celebration and delivered a speech, noted that the number of female researchers has been increasing and said that efforts are being made to empower women and enable them to take on leadership roles.
He also pointed out that the work started by the coalition should be continued to enhance the participation and leadership role of women in science, research, technology and innovation.
The creation of the Women Researchers Association will create great potential for the overall prosperity of the country, the Honorable Minister of Women and Social Affairs noted.
The State Minister for Higher Education Development, Hon. Ato Kora Tushune, said that no single institution can make a meaningful difference in women’s higher education and research.
The State Minister stressed that women’s participation and leadership in science, research, technology and innovation requires the participation and coordination of all.
He stressed that universities and research institutions should institutionalize gender-responsive policies and support and recognize women entrepreneurs and researchers.
He also said that development partners’ financial support should be aligned with long-term capacity building, strengthening financial and incubation centers, and designing intellectual property systems and market access.
The Executive Director of the Research and Community Development Department, Dr. Handiso (PhD), said that efforts are being made to enhance the capacity of female researchers in all higher education institutions and increase their contributions.
The President of the Ethiopian Women Researchers Association, Esther Teshome (PhD), said that the association is working to increase the participation and leadership role of women and girls in science, research, technology, and innovation.
