(December 9/2018 Ministry of Education) School principals from different regions visited Adama Secondary School and toured the school’s backyard farming activities alongside their teaching and learning activities and gained experience.
At the same time, the school’s principal, Ato Hussein Beriso, said that the school has been able to benefit itself and the local community through backyard farming activities alongside its teaching and learning activities.
The school has achieved results by using the open spaces in the school grounds to produce milk and eggs, to raise bees, and to grow fruits such as papaya, oranges, and mangoes, and to prepare compost fertilizer, Ato Hussein said.
The principal, who stated that the backyard farm has started with poultry farming, explained that it is currently producing 1,000 chickens and is currently producing at least 900 to 950 eggs per day.
He said that the school has also started producing several liters of milk per day and supplying it to the school and the local community.
He said that the backyard farm that the school started has not only benefited the teachers and the community, but also promoted vocational and practical education and allowed students to combine theoretical education with practical learning.
Ato Abay Berhanu, Deputy Principal of Adama High School, said that the school has opened a pre-primary school based on the effectiveness of the backyard farm and is accepting and teaching students aged 4 to 6.
The deputy principal pointed out that the school has also provided milk, eggs and other products from its own farm to the pre-primary school, which has reduced the cost of food for students and has enabled them to have a balanced diet. In addition, the school has also built houses for 21 teachers to live in, saving space on the school premises.
The principals who participated in the visit were informed during the visit that the school has also provided houses for 21 teachers to live in. Selected secondary school heads from Afar and Oromia regions and district education office heads were present during the visit.
