(November 05/2018) Today, the Standing Committee on Human Resources Development, Employment and Technology Affairs of the People’s Representatives reviewed the performance of the education sector for the first quarter of the year.
At the same time, the Minister of Education, Professor Berhanu Nega, stated that there was a problem regarding the awarding of honorary doctorates in higher education institutions and that a national guideline for the awarding of honorary doctorates has been prepared and is ready for implementation.
He stressed that all higher education institutions must implement the guideline and that people who receive honorary doctorates cannot use the title of doctor or honorary doctor.
The Honorable Minister, who mentioned that the guideline stipulates that higher education institutions must meet national and international standards to award honorary doctorates;
He mentioned that an Ethiopian or other citizen who has made a special contribution to his profession and meets the criteria listed in the guidelines can receive an honorary doctorate, but explained that the honorary doctorate cannot be used as a title. The Ministry of Education has prepared and sent a guideline to the relevant parties regarding higher education institutions that can award honorary doctorates, and that an individual who has been awarded an honorary doctorate cannot use the titles of doctor, honorary doctor and similar titles by any individual or organization.
