(August 2/2017) An awareness-raising workshop was held with the leaders and members of student parents’ associations from all over the country to prevent violence against children.
In her message delivered at the opening of the workshop, the Executive Director of the Women and Social Affairs Department of the Ministry of Education, Ms. Mehrete Kristo Tamiru, stated that studies indicate that the spread of HIV, unplanned pregnancy, gender-based violence and child marriage are becoming serious problems in many areas of our country, and this is a matter of concern.
She added that the participants have prepared an action plan to return to work after returning from this training, and she emphasized that there should be continuous and extensive awareness-raising work so that the community can play its part by paying attention to the safety and education of their children.
He also stressed that parents have a responsibility not only to send their children to school but also to monitor their children’s educational status, behavior, and behavior from home to school and back home.
Dr. Abdulai Salfo, Education Sector Officer, UNESCO Liaison Office to the African Union, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the Ethiopian Representative Office, noted that the problems have affected the lives of students and the quality of education.
The official added that these problems cause lasting physical, psychological and economic problems and darken the future prospects of many young people, and that their organization is continuously involved in preventing and solving this problem.
National UNESCO Secretary General Ato Alemu Getahun, for his part, called on the members of the Parents’ Association to use the resources they receive from the workshop to fulfill their responsibility to work in coordination with the school community and the local community in preventing issues that affect students.
At the forum, various studies showing the prevalence of the problems were presented and an extensive discussion was held among the participants.
