The Conference of the Ethiopian Government Higher Education Institutions Reform Council is being held under the theme “Higher Education for Greater Impact” hosted by the University of Gondar.
(July 28/2017) In his opening speech at the event, the State Minister for Higher Education Development, Honorable Ato Kora Tushne, stated that this conference is a place to assess the extent of the reform activities being implemented in the education sector and to set the future direction.
He also emphasized the important role of higher education institutions in creating a competitive, prosperous, sovereign, democratic and just Ethiopia.
He said that “the quality of education is not a matter of choice, but rather an opportunity to discuss the work done and not done to ensure quality according to the key performance indicators that higher education institutions have entered into.” He also said that the forum will provide an opportunity to exchange experiences between universities.
The President of the University of Gondar, Asrat Atsedwein (Dr.), said that the Ethiopian Government Higher Education Institutions Reform Council will hold a special meeting during the celebration of the 70th anniversary of Gondar University and the 100th anniversary of the General Specialized Hospital, and thanked them for this.
He noted that the changes being made to make universities autonomous are admirable and explained that the University of Gondar is also working to become autonomous.
The President said that higher education institutions are the messengers of new practices and change, and for this, it is necessary to work together.
The program included heads of the Ministry of Education, university presidents; vice presidents; members of the Human Resources and Technology Standing Committee of the House of People’s Representatives; heads of the Teachers’ Association; and students of higher education. Union leaders and responsible institutions were present.
