(July 30, 2017) The new education policy states that inclusive education is a matter that will be implemented widely and intensively.
Dr. Yuhannes Wegaso, the Executive Director of Educational Programs and Quality Improvement at the Ministry of Education, said that the initiatives being taken by the Ministry of Education to achieve the goal of inclusive education as set out in the policy are promising.
The Executive Director added that the role of partners and partner organizations is making a significant contribution to improving the implementation to a better level.
The Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the Government of Finland, has indicated that the implementation of the “Teacher Education for Inclusion and Quality (TEFIQ)” project is being recorded in the activities carried out to strengthen the capacity of teacher training colleges and expand and strengthen the implementation centers of the Akato Education.
In a statement given by the Ethiopian Coordinator of the project, Maria Matero, she stated that this project, which is currently being implemented, will build the capacity of teacher training colleges and create a platform for citizens to receive equitable and quality education without any discrimination.
On his part, the National Advisor for Teacher Training in the project, Ahmed Ismail (PhD), indicated that such supports will play a significant role in developing the skills of teacher trainers in inclusive teaching methods; strengthening the model Akato Education Support Centers and enhancing the efforts to make the curriculum preparation and implementation inclusive.
The project’s Akato Education Advisor, Ali Sani (Dr.), for his part, pointed out that in addition to the government’s efforts to make educational institutions inclusive, the support of such partners is crucial, and this project, which is being implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Education of Ethiopia and the Government of Finland, is an example. The National Advisor also stated that the number of Akato Education Centers has now increased to more than 1,400 through extensive work carried out recently.
